- the TAROKO gorge -

The TAROKO gorge is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world.  The name "Taroko" simply means beautiful in the local dialect of the Ami's,- and when seeing it, it soon becomes obvious, that the aboriginal who named it, did not exaggerate!

The gorge is about 20 kilometers long,- with sheer cliffs made from  marble, and at one place going vertical up 1000 m -, and through this wonder flows the Li Wu (Foggy) river!

I have had the good fortune to pass through the Taroko Gorge 3 times, first time in 1973, when I actually wanted to cross Taiwan from Hualien to Taichung.  The bus passed through the Taroko Gorge, and when the bus reached the station where the gorge stopped, I had changed plans! I stepped out from the bus and immediately returned to Hualien. I simply could not leave such scenery.
The next day I passed through the gorge the second time, but this time in my own taxi, so that I could stop and get off wherever I wanted in order to experience the fantastic views the best possible way, - and of course my cameras glowed.
Eventually I crossed the whole island, - from Hualien to Taichung by my own private taxi.  Of course not the same taxi all the way.  We stopped here and there on the road and changed taxi whenever possible, - I forgot how many times -, but eventually I had crossed Taiwan along the most scenic route imaginable.

Since 1973 I promised myself, that this Taroko Gorge was worth another visit where I would stay for longer time, in order to explore and see more.
39 years later I did return for the third time, - this time with my wife Kit Yu, who loves nature and adventure just as much as I do.
This time we did the gorge by foot, - not in one go of course, but bit by bit -,exploring a new section and a new trail every day.
The following pictures from the gorge is from this trip done in 2012.

Please enjoy my new images of the TAROKO gorge, - featuring the  Shakadang Trail, - the Lushui Trail, - the Eternal Spring Shrine and the  Xiangde Temple  with the  Tianfeng Pagoda .
