Chiang Kai-shek's Residence

The Zhongxing Guesthouse.

President Chiang Kai-shek had several houses spread all over Taiwan, but this one on the slopes of Yangmingshan is the only one built for him.
Built in 1969-70, it is also the biggest of Chiang's villas, and he used it as a summer retreat and to wellcome important foreign guests.
It is also known as "Yangmingshuwu" and nicknamed "Green House" because of it's green colour.
The house is surrounded by trees and the green colour served to camouflage the house, in case the mad man on the other side of the Taiwan Strait should get the idea of bombing the house.
In those days such an attack on the house was a clear and present danger, and therefore the house was constructed with concrete reinforcements and heavy beams.  The basement was considered bomb proof and has escape routes out into the forests around.
The grounds around the house offer pleasant footpaths around the vegetation and was a great place for Chiang to do his morning exercise and meditation.

The house is now open to visitors, that can take a guided tour through the big house, - a mixture of European and classic Chinese style
Following pictures are from such a tour, - in pouring rain - - - -
